Superworms vs mealworms
The short answer: superworms are bigger and fattier, for larger pets; mealworms are smaller and easier to keep, for smaller pets. The single biggest practical difference is storage: mealworms can be refrigerated to slow them down, and superworms cannot — the fridge kills them.
Side by side
| Superworms | Mealworms | |
|---|---|---|
| Size | Large, about 2 inches | Small, about 1 inch |
| Fat | Higher — a richer, fattier feeder | Lower — a leaner everyday feeder |
| Storage | Room temperature only; refrigeration is fatal | Refrigerate around 40-50°F to slow pupation |
| Pupation | Won't pupate while kept together — stays a worm indefinitely | Pupates readily into beetles if kept warm |
| Bite risk | Can nip — offer with tongs, and crush the head for small pets | Gentle; safe for most pets as-is |
Which pet gets which
Mealworms suit leopard geckos, smaller lizards, and birds — pets with smaller mouths and lower fat needs. Superworms suit bearded dragons, larger lizards, and frogs that can handle a bigger, meatier worm. For very small pets, mealworms are the only sensible choice of the two; a superworm can be too large and too strong-jawed for a tiny gecko or a small frog.
Storage, in practice
Keep superworms at room temperature in a ventilated container with some bran or oats and a slice of potato or carrot for moisture — they last weeks this way, and because they don't pupate in groups, there's no rush. Keep mealworms the same way for everyday use, or refrigerate them if you need to slow them down; bring them back to room temperature and feed them a day before offering, so they're gut-loaded and active.
Neither as a sole staple
Both worms are useful, but neither should be the only feeder. Rotate them with crickets or dubia roaches, dust with calcium, and treat superworms as the richer option — fine regularly for a big dragon, but too fatty as an everyday food for a small, sedentary pet.
